Stockprowler’s pick this
week... BICO, Inc. (OTCBB: BIKO) Corporate Web Site: http://www.biocontrol-tech.com/index2.html
BICO,
Inc. (OTCBB: BIKO) trading at only 3.5 cents a share recently
announced that its subsidiary, Rapid HIV Detection Corp., has received
an order for 14,000 of its InstantScreen® Rapid HIV tests from Walter
Reed Army Institute of Research for further evaluation by its HIV
Research Program in Washington, DC. The additional evaluation of
InstantScreen follows results obtained on Walter Reed studies of 592
InstantScreen tests, which demonstrated 100% accuracy. InstantScreen is
a finger-prick blood test that can quickly determine if someone is
infected with HIV, the virus that can cause AIDS. The advantages of
InstantScreen are: ·
100% accurate -- In combined evaluations on nearly 1200 specimens
by institutions such as Walter Reed Army Institute; Noguchi Memorial
Institute for Medical Research in Accra, Ghana; World Health
Organization; and the National Institute for Virology in South Africa,
InstantScreen has shown 100% accuracy in detecting both those infected
with the HIV virus and those not infected when compared to the world
wide accepted laboratory tests known as ELISA (for initial screening)
and Western Blot (for confirmation). ·
Instant results -- Within 30 seconds or less the results are known
Simple to use -- InstantScreen requires no special training, extra
equipment, or refrigeration, uses only a small amount of finger prick
blood, and anyone who can read at least on an elementary level can
administer the test ·
Affordable -- $10 or less in most instances The
data from Walter Reed's recent evaluation of rapid HIV tests was
presented on Monday, August 13, 2001 at the National HIV Prevention
Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. During the conference, Dr. Nelson T.
Michael, Chief - Department of Molecular Diagnostics and Pathogenesis at
Walter Reed and Dr. Bernard Branson, Medical Epidemiologist for the
CDC's National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention, stressed the need
for rapid HIV testing as the first step to combat the HIV/AIDS pandemic
not only in the United States but worldwide as well. More
than 40% of HIV positive Americans don’t know they are infected until
they develop full-blown AIDS, sometimes missing out on treatment that
could prolong their lives considerably if administered soon after the
initial HIV infection. Dr. Ronald Valdiserri, deputy director of HIV
prevention for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, stated,
“ Significant numbers of people with HIV are only finding out about
their infection when they feel sick. We must reach these individuals at
an earlier stage of infection for their own health and to prevent
transmission to others.” The latest data shows that the decline in new
reported AIDS cases is flattening out, causing health officials to
express concern that “the country may be headed for a new wave of
HIV/AIDS infections.” The
InstantScreen test performs very accurately due to its novel genetically
engineered “designer” antigens, which recognize only the HIV virus,
eliminating unspecific reactions that often give false positive results,
especially where there is high incidence of malaria, tuberculosis, and
hepatitis. The test is easy to use, requiring no special training,
additional equipment, or refrigeration, which makes it perfectly suited
for mass testing in developing countries and equally suitable for
clinics, doctor's offices, and even home use where permitted. In
addition, newly formed BICO subsidiary, Rapid HIV Detection Corp., will
market two recently acquired companion rapid HIV diagnostic tests, which
were developed at, and are manufactured by, the German-American
Institute for Applied Biomedical Research, GmbH (GAIFAR) in Potsdam,
Germany: InstantConfirm(TM), an 8-minute Western-Blot Type HIV
confirmation test; and InstantDifferentiate(TM), used to determine if
the patient is infected with either HIV-1 or HIV-2. InstantConfirm is
the first such test to successfully transform the widely used gold
standard Western Blot laboratory test into a rapid format, usable
immediately to confirm a positive result. Altogether, the three tests
can be used to diagnose in approximately ten minutes or less a person's
HIV infection status, confirm that diagnosis and then determine if a
confirmed infection is the less aggressive HIV-2 or the more aggressive
HIV-1. InstantScreen
was tested against the widely internationally accepted laboratory tests
known as ELISA (screening test) and Western Blot (confirmation test)
with 100% accuracy. InstantConfirm is the first test to transform the
widely used gold standard Western Blot laboratory test into a rapid
format, usable immediately to confirm a positive result. Confirmation
results are obtained in 8 minutes or less. No other test on the market
has a companion rapid confirmation test. Use of the Western Blot
laboratory confirmation test usually costs $50-$90 each. Necessary
manpower and transportation to and from the laboratory from the point of
screening would be an extra cost. Results would take days or weeks.
InstantConfirm results cost a fraction and the results are known before
the patient leaves the testing site. BICO,
Inc. acquired the exclusive worldwide marketing rights from GAIFAR in
Potsdam, Germany, where InstantScreen was developed by Dr. Heinrich
Repke. Dr. Repke has a Ph.D in Immunology, a D.Sc in Molecular
Pharmacology, and spent 5 years as an Assistant Professor of Pathology
and of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. BICO
is currently in discussions with various political officials,
corporations, and other groups regarding use of the diagnostic test(s)
wherever AIDS is rampant. Initial target markets for the diagnostics are
Africa, India, South America, and the Caribbean, where AIDS is prevalent
and the Germany-produced products do not need FDA approval. However,
GAIFAR will immediately begin the US FDA approval process, which is
expected to be fast- tracked due to the significant need for such a
rapid accurate HIV test. BICO,
Inc. primary business is the development and manufacture of new devices,
which include models of a non-invasive glucose sensor, procedures
relating to the use of regional extracorporeal hyperthermia in the
treatment of cancer and environmental products that help to clean up oil
spills. The company's non-invasive glucose sensor helps diabetics
measure their glucose without pricking their fingers or having to draw
blood. Regional extracorporeal hyperthermia is a system that
recirculates the patient's blood in a specific area of the body after
the blood has been heated outside the body. The recirculated blood's
higher temperature helps treat certain diseases by inducing an
artificial fever that kills targeted cells. The company was incorporated
in 1972. In June 2000, the company changed its corporate name from
Biocontrol Technology, Inc. to BICO, Incorporated. It is
the opinion of Stockprowler.com that shares of BIKO are poised to
explode when/if the medical community in the U.S. officially recognizes
InstantScreen as the HIV “test of choice”. Recognition by the Walter
Reed Army Institute of Research and a very favorable reception to the
InstantScreen test at the recent HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta
are giant steps toward that goal. Despite the very large float here
(over 1 billion shares) a dramatic move in the stock price of BIKO is
possible, especially in light of the recent heavy trading volumes in the
stock... a 10 bagger here is not out of the realm of possibility. Shares
of BIKO closed up 50% on Friday at 3.5 cents on 153,750,700 shares
traded. Stockprowler readers are encouraged to visit the BIKO company
