Though it may not seem like it, now may well be the time to buy. Borrowing a line from mutual fund great, Sir John Templeton, "I always made the most money when I bought at the point of maximum pessimism". Looking at the Stockprowler Scoreboard, it is difficult to imagine small caps going much lower than what we are seeing now… in addition, the trading volumes of these little stocks are very thin. Stockprowler.com is guardedly optimistic that the market will start to rebound after the next Fed meeting… with the possibility of June being better than expected… And now the Stockprowler.com pick of the week… Nexell Therapeutics Inc. (NEXL:Nasdaq)
This week's pick, Nexell Therapeutics Inc. is a Stockprowler.com anomaly… it closed Friday at 4 11/16. We don't usually profile stocks much higher than $3 per share, however, we are making an exception in this instance because we picked it up on our radar screen mid-week at under $3… Friday's stock price surge came after news that Irvine, California based Nexell's Lifecell X-Fold™ cell culture container bag was a key component in a groundbreaking gene therapy trial reported by a team of French researchers in the April 28, 2000 issue of Science Magazine. The French team used gene therapy to treat three babies with severe combined immunodeficiency, popularly called "boy in a plastic bubble disease," a rare inherited disorder that prevents infants from developing a complete immune system. Ten months after the treatment, the children are exhibiting seemingly normal immune systems. The report was widely viewed by many as the first unequivocal success of gene therapy… opening the door to potential cures for diseases ranging from cancer to AIDS. The French team inserted the missing gene into the patients' stem cells outside the body, and then transplanted the corrected stem cells back into the patients. The cells were contained, cultured and treated in special bags made by Nexell, called Lifecell X-Fold™ bags. Dr. Alain Fischer of the French team was quoted as saying, "We have found that the Nexell cell culture containers, coated with an agent known as RetroNectin™ greatly facilitate the insertion of the gene". The technology to make the unique bags is proprietary. According to Nexell, they are made of a special plastic that is charged and have tiny pores that allow for the exchange of gases, which is vital to the process of culturing cells. In addition to the work of the French team, researchers at the National Institutes of Health have successfully treated patients suffering from a rare congenital blood disorder, chronic granulomatous disease using corrected stem cells that had also been transduced in RetroNectin™ coated Lifecell X-Fold™ container bags. The Nexell container bags are likely to become a standard component in the protocols used by scientists in future gene therapy trials according to a leading gene therapy researcher. "Two independent laboratories have now validated this ex vivo gene therapy approach in living patients," stated Dennis Van Epps, vice president of research and development at Nexell Therapeutics. "We believe that stem cells may provide a promising vehicle for certain gene therapies and are working to provide the research community with the technologies required to move these discoveries into broader clinical use." In addition to Lifecell X-Fold™ container bags, Nexell develops and markets Isolex Cell Selection systems utilizing cell selection technology for the treatment of cancer and other life threatening diseases. NEXL closed Friday at $4.68 up $1.66 on volume of 10,732,700 shares. Nexell was the leading percent gainer on the Nasdaq biotech index of 203 companies. Good trading… Stockprowler |
