Before
we get to this week's pick, Stockprowler would like to run through
a few updates of past picks, and also issue a few watch advisories
on stocks which are likely to be profiled on Stockprowler.com in the
coming weeks and months. First, the updates... CXI
(AMEX): Stockprowler has been hearing the buzz that the
Army demo contract recently awarded to Commodore is going to have
a dollar amount between $7 and $10 million. Also, check out the warrants
for POPM (Nasdaq) ticker symbol
POPMW trading around 5/8... API
(AMEX) appears to be poised to take advantage of a burgeoning
market for LAAPD (Large-Area Avalanche Photo-Diodes). This could become
huge... stay tuned for more information as it develops...Previous
pick of the week, QSRI (OTC:BB),
keeps on drilling for $$... Friday after the close, Queen Sand Resources,
Inc. announced another successful natural gas well in Zapata County,
Texas with an initial production of 16.8 million cu.ft. per day...
A watch advisory is issued on ECNC
(OTC:BB), Los Angeles based eConnect, Inc. has developed the first
Linux-based transactional server for the purpose of receiving incoming
Internet cash payments by ATM card and PIN. These are small, easy
to use, low cost devices that can be used in locations where larger
traditional PC-based kiosks could not be profitably placed. ECNC
closed at 22 cents on nearly 10 million shares traded Friday...
This appears to be a very cheap Linux play... remember you saw it
here. Lastly, watch IVOC (OTC:BB)...
this innovator in interactive voice response technology appears to
be rapidly gaining the attention of the business world... it closed
up Friday at 28 cents...
OK...and
now the Stockprowler pick of the week....
HYBN
(OTC:BB) - Little known biotech company, Hybridon, Inc. based in Milford,
Massachusetts is soon likely to become a major player. Hybridon is
a pioneer in the discovery and development of antisense or mirror
image synthetic DNA and RNA compounds... these are genetic drugs that
have the potential to treat cancers, AIDS, hepatitis, and other viral
diseases. These synthetic RNA and DNA drugs work by stopping the body's
production of disease causing proteins at the genetic level. Hybridon's
GEM 231, a drug for solid tumors is currently in the second of three
phases of federally required testing before being granted FDA approval.
HYBN holds
many important patents in the antisense area both here and in Europe...
as antisense technology is shown to be a promising treatment for viral
related disease, Hybridon will suddenly be perceived as a key player.
An important part of Hybridon's business strategy has been to enter
into research and development collaborations, licensing agreements,
and other alliances with major players, primarily biotechnology and
pharmaceutical companies, to develop its products. Also, HYBN
manufactures genetic materials on a contract basis for
other companies... the list of such customers has recently grown to
69. Hybridon's partners include Searle, Perkin-Elmer, Pharmacia, and
Medtronic. On Thursday, Hybridon, Inc. announced it had secured $6.8
million in financing. Existing investors, senior company managers
and directors were among those who provided the financing, the company
announced. The debt will become convertible to company stock. Margaret
Flanagan, senior director of business development, said the money
from the financing should fund company operations through 2000. HYBN
closed up Friday at 1 1/16. Only 16 million shares outstanding.
Merry
Christmas ... Stockprowler
